Remember, remember, the 5th of November. Gunpowder, treason and plot! Start your November in true traditional British style, remembering Guy Fawkes with fireworks of course! Guy Fawkes The Gunpowder Plot is one of Britain’s most famous attempts on the life of a monarch. In 1605 a group of 13 Catholic men planned to kill King James I by blowing up the Houses of Parliament with him and many others inside. After being oppressed under the rule of Queen Elizabeth I English Catholics had had enough. Robert Catesby led the group who managed to acquire 36 barrels of gunpowder and plant them in the cellar of the House of Lords. Unfortunately for them, the group were betrayed and their plan was foiled. On the night between 4th and 5th November, the cellar was stormed and group member Guy Fawkes was found along with the gunpowder. He was then captured, tortured and finally executed. Was he framed? The Mexican Day of the Dead Festival is an annual celebration where people gather to celebrate their lost loved ones and light candles in their memory. No really, you should go! Def Con 5 is everything your inner Star Wars nerd could want in a convention and you get to enjoy it over a whole weekend on Saturday 15th and Sunday 16th October! Def Con 5 Nerdageddon is the biggest name in the south when it comes to movie and comic themed events. Don’t be fooled by the name, Def Con 5 will be just as extreme as the 4 before it were! As always, the fun won’t just be Star Wars related. There will be all kinds of sci-fi fun and games to enjoy including visits from a trio of Red Dwarf actors Norman Lovett, Chris Barrie and our personal favourite; Robert Llewellyn (You may also remember him as the best host of Scrapheap Challenge ever)! We all do it now and then, whether we like to admit it or not, but on September 19th you can say it loud and proud! What’s It All About? Well in 1995 two men with little to no skill in racquetball began to encourage each other by shouting piratey encouragement and mild insults during a game. They enjoyed it so much that they decided then and there that there should be a holiday where everyone has to talk like a pirate! For seven years John Baur and Mark Summers celebrated their holiday between themselves and friends, until they chanced upon the e-mail of a man they wanted to be the spokesman for their event, Dave Barry.
