On the 23rd May Eurovision will be back! This year’s hosts, Austria have a big task ahead to beat last year’s glittering show in Denmark which saw their star Conchita Wurst win!

A Little Eurovision History

This will be the 60th anniversary of the Eurovision Song Contest which first aired on 24th May 1956. Since then it has remained a strong TV favourite all across Europe and even gets views worldwide in places like Hong Kong, Australia and the US. The contest has been broadcast every year without fail since it began, making it one of the longest running TV shows in the world! An impressive achievement for a show that began before satellite television existed.

To mark the 60th anniversary of Eurovision, this year Australia has been invited to take part in the song contest as a special edition to the celebrations. Eurovision has been broadcast in Australia for over 30 years and seeing as Austria’s theme is “Building Bridges” it seemed only right to invite our good friends from overseas!

The UK has been a part of the Eurovision Song Contest from the beginning and has taken part each year and even hosted it 8 times so far. The last time we won Eurovision was 18 years ago in 1997 with Katrina and The Waves singing “Love Shine a Light”. This was just one of 5 victories claimed by the UK. We have also come in the top 5 acts 29 times thus far, with hopes to boost that number this month!

This year we’re supporting our 2015 hopefuls Electro Velvet with their song “Still in Love with You”. They are a fresh new duo that likes to blend vintage music and modern beats to give us electro-swing. We just know they can win over the hearts of Europe! You may recognise Bianca Nicolas from her audition on The Voice UK which has gained quarter of a million views on YouTube; she has also performed for members of the Royal family. Alex Larke is both a primary school teacher and Mick Jagger impersonator that tours with his tribute act “The Rolling Clones”. With so much talent between them; it’s no wonder that they made the grand finals for Eurovision.

What To Wear?

If past years have been anything to go by, we know you love dressing up for Eurovision! You could all dress up as your home country or even as a different country from Europe. This year’s host is Austria, so why not come and grab yourself a very fetching lederhosen costume? We also have some matching ladies outfits if you’re looking for group fancy dress. If you’re not one to go all out then we have stunning hats and wigs to get you in the mood for some Euro partying!
