Live Long and Prosper at the 2014 Destination Star Trek Convention
Star Trek has one of the largest and most loyal fan bases in the history of Science Fiction. The first series aired in 1966 and almost half a century later there have been 12 films, six television series (three of them spanning 7 seasons!) and countless conventions.
Trekkers will gather in London this October for the annual Destination Star Trek event, which will take place on the 3rd-5th and will feature a number of important live speakers. The event, hosted at Excel London, will include guest speakers such as Patrick Stewart, William Shatner, Karl Urban, Jonathan Frakes, Michael Dorn, Marina Sirtis, LeVar Burton, Jeri Ryan, Gates McFadden, Denise Crosby, John de Lancie and many more.
The three daylong event is packed with Trekkie fun and guests will be able to get assimilated by the Borg, take control of the U.S.S. Enterprise bridge or meet some of the actors that they know and love from the famous sci fi series. During the talks by the guest speakers, audience members will have a question and answer period where they can ask their favourite actors questions about their experiences working on the show.
The event will also include opportunities for fans to have their photo taken with their favourite actors as well as get autographs. Original props from the TV series will be on display and films will be shown in the museum area. There will also quizzes, parties, fan panels and photo shoots as well. This very popular Star Trek event is in its third year and it’s no wonder as the event draws Trekkies from all over.
A Great Selection of Star Trek Guests
As stated above the event this year there will be a fantastic selection of special guest speakers, including some of your favourite Star Trek actors. Here are a few of the very best speakers to look forward to:
Famous for his role as Captain Jean-Luc Picard in the Next Generation, Patrick Stewart is one of the leading actors in England and crops up in many movies and TV shows such as American Dad and X-men. He stars in many theatrical productions both on and off Broadway too. He is also associated with the Royal Shakespeare Company and was knighted by Queen Elizabeth for his excellent “services to drama” in 2009. Patrick Stewart will be appearing at the 2014 Destination Star Trek event for autographs, photo opportunities and a talk.
Leonard Nimoy will be appearing via a live video feed at the conference for a very special one-off talk. He is known for his role as Mister Spock, but he has also performed in many feature films and television shows, including “A Woman Called Golda” which won an Emmy award. Nimoy has also written several books of poetry and plays the role of Dr. William Bell on the Fox Network sci fi series Fringe.
This Canadian born actor played the role of Captain James T. Kirk and has also had a successful career in theatrical productions, on Broadway and in film. He has starred in 7 Star Trek films and has made appearances in several television series, including Rescue 911 and TJ Hooker. He won an Emmy Award for his portrayal of the attorney character Denny Crane on Boston Legal and The Practice.
The much-loved and very talented actor will be making an appearance at Destination Star Trek for autograph signings, photos and a special talk. This will be a popular talk so make sure you book ahead!
These are just a few of the iconic Star Trek actors that will be contributing their stories and experience to this very special conference. There will also be many others there, including Bruce Greenwood, Karl Urban, Jeri Ryan, Brent Spiner, Jonathan Frakes, Nichelle Nichols, Levar Burton, Michael Dorn and Marina Sirtis. As well as many famous Star Trek actors, there will also be appearances by Director and Writer Nicholas Meyer, Science Consultant Andre Bormanis, Writer Brian Fuller and Visual Effects Specialist Ronald B. Moore.
Keep in mind that there will be long lines for autographs and you probably won’t have the time for a leisurely chat with your favourite Star Trek actor. The lines need to move quickly so that everyone will get a chance to meet that actor. If you want more time to ask the guest a question, wait until they are giving their talk on stage. You will be able to step up to the microphone to ask them, or submit a question.
Get Dressed Up
One of the most fun aspects of attending a Star Trek convention is the costumes that the fans wear. It is customary to dress up as your favourite Star Trek characters and many fans put hours of work into their costumes. You will see Klingons with moulded prosthetic foreheads, blue Andorans with antennas95, elaborate Borg costumes and outfits made to resemble iconic members of the various shows. When you are putting together your costume, don’t worry about being overdressed – the most realistic and detailed the better!
You can find a great selection of Star Trek costumes online, such as the classic costumes for Captain Kirk, Spock and Scotty. You can also complete your look with accessories, such as prosthetic ears and a black wig for a Spock costume. Take a look around and find the costume that suits you the best. Make sure that you choose something that will be comfortable because you will be wearing it all day long.
Don’t forget to also bring something to put your autographs and photos in, such as an envelope or a hard folder, so that you can get them home safely without getting smudged or bent. Bringing some snacks with you certainly won’t hurt either, although there are food venues around the event as well.
Fan conventions can be a lot of fun and most people are there to have a good time and indulge themselves in their passion of Star Trek. If you are a passionate Trekkie and you love the Star Trek universe, you already have something in common with everyone else who will be attending this event. It’s a great place to meet new friends and share your passion for this sci fi series, so have fun!
