Prepare for a whole week of family fun and excitement with Swanage carnival and regatta! From Saturday 25th July to Swanage carnivalSaturday 1st August there will be non-stop entertainment that everyone can enjoy so come on down!

A Little History

The event dates back all the way to the mid 1800’s when it was a sailing regatta, after many years a parade was added to create the regatta and carnival. Soon the Swanage 12 road race became a welcome addition to the celebrations and in the 1950’s The South Coast Rowing Association became part of the regatta. It was also at this time that Enid Blyton help position of President and the Swanage Urban District Council organised three days of celebrations including a procession and fireworks.

In the 60’s a group of volunteers took over with the aim to ‘promote and provide public entertainment and raise money for charitable causes’, which is still what they aim for today. Continuing tradition, each year the carnival association raises thousands of pounds to good causes locally and nationally, with the figures reaching into the tens of thousands! Charities that benefit from the generosity of sponsors and donations are the Somerset and Dorset Air Ambulance, The Swanage Stroke Club and The Movember Foundation.

Swanage Carnival 2015

This year there will be more than 100 events taking place over the week of the carnival and regatta so there will be plenty to see and do. Aerostars Acrobatic Air Display will be returning to stun us with their flying skills, there will be a Carnival’s Got Talent show for people to come up and show off their own special talents and even a dog show for our 4 legged family members.

There really will be something for everyone to enjoy at this year’s events. For the kids, there will be treasure hunts, discos, go-karting and sand castle competitions. The whole family can take part in activities like “What’s not my line?” which is one of the oldest events in the carnival, the Swanage Bay swim, bingo games and of course the fun fair. For the adults there will just as much to enjoy, like the wheelbarrow race, a twist on a good old pub crawl, where contestants don fancy dress costumes and get wheeled from put to pub having to guzzle whatever drink is awaiting them at each.

Music is a staple for carnival week and there will be live acts every day in the afternoon and evening in the Prince Albert Gardens. Come and groove along to jazz, funk and blues all for free! Not only will there be open air music, there will also be bands playing in the marquee on the showground for 5 nights of the week. Relax with a refreshing drink from the bar and enjoy some top quality entertainment.

Thursday night will see the return of the masquerade street party on Swanage’s lower high street. Watch as the south coast gets a taste of Mardi Gras! From the Red Lion down to East Bar there will be prizes for the best fancy dress in each bar, so try your luck in all of them.

Of course, we all love to see the fireworks at Swanage carnival and they certainly won’t disappoint this year. There will be display on both Saturday evenings as well as mid week on the Wednesday. You’ll be able to see them for miles and because they’re set off from a jetty you can watch them from the beach.

The Procession

The carnival procession will take place on Sunday 26th July and this year’s theme is Superheroes! From 3pm the streets of Swanage will be awash with crime fighting good guys and a sprinkling of baddies too, we can’t wait to see what all the local floats will have in store! All parade entries will be judged before the procession sets off from Walrond Road. It will then head up De Moulham Road and down Shore Road following the seafront down to the end where it will turn up Kings Road and back to its start point. The Hollywood team can’t wait to see everyone there!
