Across the pond in New York, since 1904 hundreds of thousands of revellers gathered in Midtown Manhattan, near the newly constructed New York Times Building, to watch the now famous ball drop.

In Scotland Hogmanay is the word for the last day of the year, and normally lasts for three days. (They get an extra bank holiday on the 2nd of January).
