Remember, remember, the 5th of November. Gunpowder, treason and plot! Start your November in true traditional British style, remembering Guy Fawkes with fireworks of course! Guy Fawkes The Gunpowder Plot is one of Britain’s most famous attempts on the life of a monarch. In 1605 a group of 13 Catholic men planned to kill King James I by blowing up the Houses of Parliament with him and many others inside. After being oppressed under the rule of Queen Elizabeth I English Catholics had had enough. Robert Catesby led the group who managed to acquire 36 barrels of gunpowder and plant them in the cellar of the House of Lords. Unfortunately for them, the group were betrayed and their plan was foiled. On the night between 4th and 5th November, the cellar was stormed and group member Guy Fawkes was found along with the gunpowder. He was then captured, tortured and finally executed. Was he framed? No really, you should go! Def Con 5 is everything your inner Star Wars nerd could want in a convention and you get to enjoy it over a whole weekend on Saturday 15th and Sunday 16th October! Def Con 5 Nerdageddon is the biggest name in the south when it comes to movie and comic themed events. Don’t be fooled by the name, Def Con 5 will be just as extreme as the 4 before it were! As always, the fun won’t just be Star Wars related. Ok, so let’s talk about Suicide Squad... It may not have received glowing reviews from all of the critics, but that hasn’t stopped people flocking in their thousands to catch a glimpse of DC’s best bad guys! The Stars We’ve known the stars of this movie for a long time now and marketing weren’t shy with the teasers and clips. Margot Robbie was the perfect blend of sexy and kooky for her role as Harley Quinn. It will definitely be one of the most iconic roles of her career and we hope to see more of her in upcoming DC movies! Will Smith will always be a great action hero and Suicide Squad proves he’s still got it. He’s stern, strong and the perfect person to play Dead Shot. He also delivers one of the best comedy lines of the movie when referring to the Doomsday machine as a “swirling ring of trash”. Apart from little snippet’s and stills, we didn’t get to see too much of Jared Leto’s Joker. He definitely made this role his own with sarcasm and psychosis that rivals Jack Nicholson’s rendition. Heath Ledger did leave some very big shoes to fill and we’re not sold that Leto was the man to do it. Continue reading →

It may be a man’s world, but these girls have super powers and they’re not afraid to use them! Superhero Girls We’ve all heard of Supergirl, Batgirl and Wonder Woman; now see where it all began with this stunning animated re-imagining of the ladies of DC. We were all kids once and it can be hard growing up different. These girls may have super powers, but honing your skills is always important, that’s why they go to Super Hero High! Just like us, the Superhero Girls aren’t perfect, Supergirl is clumsy, Poison Ivy is shy and Harley Quinn is just downright unpredictable! So far the new Ghostbusters movie has received a very mixed reception of praise and criticism. The first movie trailer was notoriously the most disliked YouTube has seen! We’ll just have to wait until this Friday (15th July) to find out for ourselves if this will be a huge hit or a massive flop! Ghostbusters In 1984 the world was given the gift of Ghostbusters with the original movie starring acting legends Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd and Sigourney Weaver. The Ray Parker Jr. theme tune “Who You Gonna Call?” was catchy, the acting was comical and the action was spot on. What more could you want? Well a sequel of course! While it wasn’t as big as the original, it still received high praise. Since then, it has kept a strong cult following and merchandise has always been available with that iconic logo. For one whole week the picturesque seaside town of Swanage will be transformed for the Swanage Regatta and Carnival! There will be something to do for all ages every day so make the most of it and head down from the 30th July to the 6th August! Swanage Regatta The sun is shining so why not try your hand at some sporting events? Prizes will be on offer for all age groups throughout the week, so show them what you’ve got! There will be plenty on offer including fun runs, tennis, sailing, darts and even fishing. Sadly there will be no half marathon this year due to safety concerns and road closures, Swanage Carnival This year’s carnival procession will have a ‘Sitcom’ theme so expect to see all of your favourite TV characters old and new! As always it will take place on the Sunday 31st July at 3pm and will begin at Rabling Road, coming full circle back to that point. The 4th July is a holiday known worldwide and is a celebration of American independence. In 1776 the second continental congress met in secret to vote on the resolution of independence to separate them from the rule of Great Britain.
