The dark and gloomy days are behind us for another year, Easter Weekend 2025 is almost upon us. The frosts are a thing of memory, even Lent is behind us. So if you look very closely, you may see a very special bunny hopping around with a basket of brightly painted eggs.

Easter is most commonly associated with Jesus’s Resurrection, but predating the Cristian celebration, Pagans celebrated Ostara in early spring.

Ostara is the Pagan festival of renewal which celebrates the Goddess of dawn, fertility and renewal. It makes sense for the Goddess of renewal to be celebrated at spring time. The symbols of renewal like butterflies, hares and rabbits and pastel colours. This leads to our traditions of painting brightly coloured eggs and bunnies delivering our chocolate treats.

When Christianity arrived on the shores of England, Ostara was incorporated into the Christian celebrations with many of the Pagan traditions still being celebrated today as part of Easter. I mean who hasn’t painted or hunted for eggs, or even just gone for a picnic?
