The Traditions Behind Dressing up at Christmas

The tradition of dressing up at Christmas has been handed down to us from years of coping with harsh winters. In past times white Christmases’ were the norm and with much of our food not being able to be stored for as long as today, added to stress and uncertainty of even surviving the winter. With Christmas being about the mid-point of the winter, celebrations were made to keep everyone’s spirits up for the second half of the gloomy season.

Dressing up is an integral part of these festivities. Before the Romans bought Christianity to Britain the Celts (a nation of people who lived in Britain, Scotland, Wales and Ireland) celebrated Yule. During Yule, Pagan’s would dress trees and themselves in red, green and gold to give thanks for the returning light and immortal spirits around them. 

Jumping forward in time to the Medieval times, Christmas was a time for masquerade’s in which wealthy would attend dances that required them to wear masks to keep their identity a mystery, allowing everyone to meet for the first time (even if they knew each other beforehand).

Psychology also supports the phenomenon showing that when we wear bright colours and socialise, our bodies release good endorphins that make us happier. So to keep up the spirits of your friends and family, what parties will your throw and what are you going to wear?
