    For one whole week the picturesque seaside town of Swanage will be transformed for the Swanage Regatta and Carnival! There will be something to do for all ages every day so make the most of it and head down from the 30th July to the 6th August! Swanage Regatta The sun is shining so why not try your hand at some sporting events? Prizes will be on offer for all age groups throughout the week, so show them what you’ve got! There will be plenty on offer including fun runs, tennis, sailing, darts and even fishing. Sadly there will be no half marathon this year due to safety concerns and road closures, Swanage Carnival This year’s carnival procession will have a ‘Sitcom’ theme so expect to see all of your favourite TV characters old and new! As always it will take place on the Sunday 31st July at 3pm and will begin at Rabling Road, coming full circle back to that point. Tune in from the 5th to the 21st August to cheer on your country. Olympic Games As the name suggests, the first games were held in Olympia. It all began back in 776 BC in the time of the ancient Greeks, sports events were held in honour of the god Zeus. The games continued on for 12 centuries before being suspended in 392AD by Emperor Theodosius who banned anything he deemed a “pagan cult”. Almost exactly 1,500 years later in 1896 Greece reclaimed their history and began holding the Olympic Games once again in Athens.     Eurovision Song ContestIt’s time for the musical extravaganza that is the Eurovision Song Contest! Countries from all across Europe are gathering their finest to go up against each other and the continent as they are voted for in their thousands. The Contest is hosted by the country that has won it the year before, so this year it will take place in Stockholm, Sweden. This is the 3rd time the European Song Contest has been held there, first time was way back in 1975, then again in 2000 and now 2016! What is the Eurovision Song Contest? Eurovision or ESC for short is the longest running annual televised song competition. Participants from all different countries will pick an original song to be performed live! Then they will cast votes for the other countries’ songs to determine what the most popular song throughout the competition is. Eurovision started way back in 1956 when only 7 countries took part, in 2008 there were a record of 43 countries. The Contest has been running every year for 60 years making this its 61st! Wow!     St George 2016!
    Thursday 23rd April marks the day of England’s Patron Saint, St George, the dragon slayer. It is a day when English people St Georgeacross the globe join together and celebrate their heritage. Although it is no longer a national holiday, the English still celebrate it with pride by wearing a rose, which is our national symbol and hoisting the St George crest which is our country’s flag and also the centre of the British Union Jack flag. Who Was St George? The legend of St George and the dragon is over one thousand years old and tells of a small town in Libya where a dragon decided to take nest. Each time the villagers went to get water from the nearby spring they would disturb the dragon so they gave it sheep to eat as a distraction. When the village was out of sheep they decided that the only other way to calm the dragon was to sacrifice a girl. The Princess whose name was drawn was sent to be sacrificed, but as she neared the dragons keep, a knight of the Crusade flashed by on his white steed. St George dismounted and drew his sword to fend off the beast and after moments the dragon was slain, saving the Princess’ life. Help put an end to heart disease by getting together and raising as much money as you can! Wear It! Beat It! The British Heart Foundation is fighting for every heartbeat, but they need our help to beat heart disease once and for all! Wear It! Beat It! Is an event where schools, companies and individuals can get dressed up and fundraise for the cause! As with any charity event you can be as creative as you like with your money making methods. You could set up a photo booth at your work or school where people give £2 to put on funny fancy dress and have their picture taken. Saint Andrew is the patron saint of Scotland, Greece, Romania, Russia, Poland, Ukraine, the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople and Saint Andrew, Barbados. In these other European countries, superstition surrounds St Andrew's day, with many believing that the eve of this celebration is the opportune time to carry out rituals revealing the future husbands of single women.
